Teenage Driver Cell Phone Ban Takes Effect Next Tuesday

Posted Friday, May 10th 2013 @ 11am  by Talk Radio 105.7 FM / 570 AM

The Utah Highway Patrol says numbers don't lie:  young drivers make up only eight percent of all the drivers on state roads -- but they are involved in 21 percent of all the accidents.

That statistic prompted state lawmakers, last winter, to make it illegal for 16-and-17-year-old drivers to use their cell phones.

The fine for violating the law is $25.

It takes effect Tuesday, May 14, 2013.

Exceptions to the ban allow teens to call 9-1-1 for an emergency, or to call a parent.
