Alpine City and Uncle Sam Complete Joint Project to Ward Off Flood Damage

Posted Wednesday, July 9th 2014 @ 11am  by Talk Radio 105.7 FM / 570 AM

IT'S BEEN A YEAR NOW, SINCE FLOOD WATERS ROARED THROUGH ALPINE... CAUSING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF DAMAGE.

NOW THE CITY -- AND THE FEDERAL NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE -- HAVE JOINED FORCES, TO CONSTRUCT SEVERAL BERMS, TO DIRECT FUTURE FLOOD WATER AWAY FROM HOMES AND INTO CREEKS.

CONSERVATIONISTS SAY THE IMPROVEMENTS AREN'T FOOLPROOF... BUT ARE DESIGNED TO HANDLE A SO-CALLED "100 YEAR FLOOD."

THE BERM PROJECT COST $1.8-MILLION.

EXPERTS EXPECT FLOODING TO REMAIN A PROBLEM IN ALPINE -- FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS -- UNTIL MORE VEGETATION GROWS OVER THE 20-THOUSAND ACRE BURN SCAR LEFT BY A WILDFIRE.
