Lawmakers Vote to Leave Legal Tobacco Age Alone

Posted Tuesday, March 4th 2014 @ 11am  by Talk Radio 105.7 FM / 570 AM

STATE LAWMAKERS HAVE KILLED THAT BILL THAT WOULD HAVE MADE UTAH THE FIRST STATE IN THE COUNTRY, TO RAISE THE AGE PEOPLE CAN BUY TOBACCO PRODUCTS FROM 19 TO 21.

THE UTAH SENATE VOTED 16-TO-12 AGAINST THE MEASURE, ARGUING IT INFRINGED UPON ADULTS' LEGAL RIGHTS.

THE BILL'S SPONSOR SAID IT WOULD PREVENT YOUNG PEOPLE FROM BECOMING SMOKERS, BECAUSE IT WOULD DELAY THEIR ACCESS TO TOBACCO.

OUR STATE IS ALREADY AMONG A HANDFUL OF STATES THAT BAN SALES FOR THOSE YOUNGER THAN 19 YEARS OF AGE, RATHER THAN 18.

NEW YORK CITY RAISED THE LEGAL TOBACCO PURCHASE AGE TO 21, LAST YEAR.

COLORADO IS CONSIDERING A SIMILAR PROPOSAL, THIS YEAR.
