Younger Mormon Missionaries Not Hitting USU Enrollment as Hard as Expected

OFFICIALS AT UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY SAY, A DIP IN SPRING ENROLLMENT CONTINUES TO BE DUE, PRIMARILY, TO THE MORMON CHURCH POLICY CHANGE, ALLOWING MISSIONARIES TO SERVE AT A YOUNGER AGE.

BUT SCHOOL AUTHORITIES ALSO SAY, THE DECLINE IS LESS SEVERE THAN EXPECTED.

RECENT FIGURES -- FROM THE UTAH SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION -- INDICATE, U-S-U HAS ABOUT 1100 FEWER STUDENTS THAN A YEAR AGO.

THAT'S A DROP OF ABOUT FIVE PERCENT.

THE CHURCH RECENTLY CHANGED THE MINIMUM AGE FOR MEN SERVING MISSIONS FROM 19 TO 18. FOR WOMEN, THE AGE DROPPED FROM 21 TO 19.
